heh, the latest Facebook Western Union scam

I love the trick to get the scammer's IP address. I'll have to remember that one. That's classic.

this is great. it could only be better if james had been sitting right next to you.

(this is amanda, melissa's friend, btw. and if you aren't doing anything with that $800 i know a guy who knows a guy who can help me get a sweet deal on some real estate development investments.)

Same deal happened to me today. Interesting thing is that I don't know my FB friend, we just have a common interest. In this case, it was odd that someone I've not met before was asking for money. That was clue #1. The rest is the identical MO to yours. This dude is a low life, but unfortunately, folks do fall for it.

OK - the WU folks will be eager to see you. They heard about your sad story (you are not alone - this apparently happens a lot) and are very eager to talk with you. In fact, the fraud department is willing to pay the fee to have your flight time changed so that they can meet with you right now to talk about this horrible horrible crime.

Hmm...I just had this happen to me twice in the past 3 days. One was via facebook. The other was a different friend whose yahoo e-mail got hijacked. I'm surprised that I've not come across this scam before and that suddenly I've seen it twice in one week. Kinda pisses me off too because not only have friends had their accounts stolen (at least briefly) but they are playing on your trust for friends and desire to help someone in need.

Thankfully I'm not drawn in by scams too easily, but I worry about people I know who are not so savvy. I did not see this particular scam on the WU fraud page. If I see this again, can I help catch one of these scammers by getting info out of them, or should I just ignore and warn my friends to do the same?
